There are three key terms that are the foundation to any basic SEO work. These are site architecture, site content and linking or link building. Having good website architecture can involve cleaning up the URL’s that are specific to every individual webpage on your site. It can also involve choosing the right web titles and descriptions for every individual web page, which is important for optimising any SEO profile.

Having the right content on your site is also important so that both the public and search engines can understand what you are about and what you offer. It is important here that you provide HTML text content that can be indexed by the search engine and priority key phrases are scattered throughout each page’s content as to attract viewers and again help search engines to understand what it is they are indexing.

The third foundational point for anyone looking to become involved in SEO is link building. Whatever your website is – blog, ecommerce site, news site – you can create your own linking power both internally and externally.

Internal Linking

Internal links are hyperlinks on a page that help navigate to another section in that document or to another web page on the same website or web page under the same company domain. An example of internal linking is this hyperlink to the Inspiration client portfolio. This form of linking is very much beneficial to visitors to your site as it makes your website more user friendly as one can easily navigate through your site. It is also beneficial to the company or person running the site as you have a higher likelihood of appearing well in search results for search engines like Google or Bing. This is due to the fact that your website has now become more ‘crawlable’ to the search engine, meaning that the engine’s automated robots can now reach  the interconnected documents of your site more easily and store more of your site’s information in their huge datacenters.

External Linking

Following on from internal links we have external links which are those hyperlinks that link to a page outside of your domain. Therefore, this could mean that you are linking to another website or that website is linking to you.

Directory link building is a way of link building externally. This is a manual link building method whereby a person submits their sites’ information to a web directory under a particular category so that it may be seen by the public, rather than be found and indexed by web crawlers. Directory submissions can be both free and paid and are a great means of making your website visible to the public, as a greater quantity of search results can appear for your website name and also your site may now appear in the search results once someone searches for a term that your site is categorized under.

As popularity is so important to any company online, especially when you are only recently starting out online and offer a similar service to other online companies, opportunities to bolster your online presence should be taken. Link building can therefore play a big part in whether your website has much of a presence online and whether people will find your site and get to know what it offers.  It is one example out of a number of steps that people can take to make their site more visible online to those that are searching for it.
