The first week of my online marketing internship with Inspiration Marketing is drawing to a close and already I have learned more about online marketing through practice than I could have expected seven days ago.
Sitting at my computer which I’m sure I will get well acquainted with over the next 6 months, certain words and phrases are floating around in my head which have already proven to be hugely important in the field of search engine optimization (SEO). The importance of having online content that is searchable, indexable, linkable, and above all relevant has shown to be important as I have been working.
My work so far has involved adding listings to Online Business Directories, adding content to clients’ profiles on social video and photo sharing websites and the writing and formatting of blogs for client sites. These activities have illustrated how necessary it is to make your business and its offerings available to the people who wish to find it.
The first step in doing this is to understand how people search on the internet and the rules and limits of the search engines being used. By inserting meta titles, meta tags and meta descriptions to all your online content you can match your articles, blogs, videos and images with the keywords and phrases entered by the public on Google and other search engines. It is important to work with the search engine in order to keep your website visible on the internet. Having duplicate content and a website driven by non HTML text content can effectively kill off your chance of visibility on Google, I have learned. Being introduced to blogging tools like WordPress and Joomla has given me a better understanding of how to create content that is best suited for Google. Once again, making your content indexable and searchable is the basis for any work in search engine optimisation.
I am well aware that these are just the basics for any online marketing or SEO work. But, as in any job it is important to learn the right steps at the beginning.
